In honor of National Diabetes Awareness Month, I’m trying to re-examine perspectives on this illness from all different angles. I ran this across this post at the Mayo Clinic blog reminding me of how difficult a new diagnosis can be on family members. And yet, for adults newly diagnosed with diabetes, so many family members are NOT particularly helpful.

Welcome to another “Where Are They Now?” update on a DiabetesMine Design Challenge entrant. This year, we received a paper entry on PicoSulin, a “revolutionary miniature insulin pump with direct Penfill Cartridge loading.”
I heard from the Geneva, Switzerland-based company last week that their website is now live, presenting in particular a new patch pump model (OmniPod competitor) they’re working on called the PicoPatch.

I’m off to Dallas today to take part in a special patient advisory council* for the American Heart Association, which is desperately trying to reach out to people with diabetes about heart health.
They’ve created a program called Heart of Diabetes (sponsored by Takeda Pharmaceuticals) and are busy gathering patient stories in video format. Now they’re trying to figure out how to further get the word out, to people with Type 2 diabetes in particular,…

Last year, the DiabetesMine Design Challenge was just getting off the ground but we had some amazing contributions! The winner of the Grand Prize was Ethan Mullis, a 25-year-old graphic and UI designer at Gnoso Inc. who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in eighth grade.
