Suddenly, it seems to be raining diabetes iPhone apps. Many of them offer sophisticated graphing of your glucose data, or educational materials, medication reminders, training videos, and even links to purchase supplies. Notice that NOT ONE of the logging apps offers a way around manual entry of your numbers — ugh!

It’s not too often we have a new insulin making its way on the scene, so we were excited to hear that Novo Nordisk filed two applications with the FDA for a new “ultra long acting” insulin called Degludec, and another for something called DegludecPlus, a combination of degludec and insulin aspart (Novolog), which would be available in an insulin pen in a fixed 70% degludec/30% Novolog ratio. If you’re an Apidra user, listen up!
Sanofi Aventis has announced that due to a technical malfunction at their plant in Frankfurt, Germany, production on all Apidra SoloSTAR insulin pens has come to a screeching halt. Sanofi has made it clear that this is an issue with the manufacturing of the pens themselves, not the insulin. Apidra insulin itself is running strong, and patients won’t have issues with previously manufactured insulin pens or any vials…

Since we tend to be pretty America-centric over here, we wanted to shine a spotlight on the annual conference for the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), which is Europe’s equivalent to the American Diabetes Association. EASD is a huge professional org for doctors, researchers, nurses, students, and so on, with 7,000 members — from 110 different countries!

Insulin maker Sanofi-Aventis took a big hit last year with the Lantus-cancer scare. But that hasn’t stopped them from charging ahead in diabetes care. According to industry observers, the company’s new US Diabetes unit, fueled by a recent “acquisition binge,” is gearing up to “turn the diabetes world upside-down” with a full set of new offerings to help doctors help patients achieve better outcomes.
