Hello again, Diabetes Alert Day.
Like clockwork every year, the American Diabetes Association marks its annual D-Alert Day on the fourth Tuesday of March. This is a one-day “wake-up call” designed to make people more aware of type 2 diabetes and offer them ways to assess their own potential to develop this condition. In other words, “Hey, you don’t want diabetes so do something about it now while you can!”

Nearly 20 years ago, it was the sleepiness and crackly, dry skin that first alerted me something was wrong. Not diabetes, as I’d already been living with type 1 for close to a decade at that time.

We all need a little perspective sometimes.
Mine came on the heels of a week of diabetes conference activity and advocacy talk, and it was a reality check that slapped me upside the head while screaming at me about how much bigger the world is than diabetes.

Living with diabetes can be a lot to deal with every day, and some of us have joked that navigating our daily D-routines can sometimes feel like an Olympic sport in itself! The Diabetes Olympics, one might say.

Not so long ago, I would’ve cringed at the idea of getting together and hanging out socially with other people with diabetes (PWDs).
Seriously. Why would anyone want to wear diabetes on their sleeve or get together because of diabetes? Especially when you have to live with it every day.
But now, I crave these connections – the chance to meet up with friends, where diabetes may come up in conversation but it doesn’t have to……
