Today is a happy day for fans of Insulet’s tubeless insulin pump system! The FDA has finally approved the next-generation OmniPod, which is 34% smaller, 25% lighter, and 16% slimmer — yet still holds same 200 units of insulin.

I have lots of news from the the huge expo floor of this year’s American Diabetes Association annual conference this week. To start off, one of the most impressive new devices I saw was indeed the new Jewel Pump from Debiotech out of Lausanne, Switzerland. My friend and colleague Dr. Rich Jackson of the Joslin Diabetes Center even went so far as to call it “best in show.”

We knew it was coming, but Insulet Corp. has been very tight-lipped about their new color-screen PDM (controller unit) for the OmniPod wireless pumping system. Well, off a tip from a reader I’ve discovered the new unit is available for pre-order starting today — and it’s looking good.
