When we reported last summer about the Helmsley Charitable Trust developing an open national registry for type 1 diabetes, we were envisioning some kind of dry database, or perhaps a big listing of sorts like ClinicalTrials.gov. We sure as heck weren’t expecting the kind of social media “wow factor” that Helmsley has infused into its new site, MyGlu.org. Check it out:

Allison and I have been at the AADE (American Association of Diabetes Educators) Annual Meeting in Las Vegas since Wednesday. It’s over 100 degrees outside, massively air-conditioned and buzzing with energy here inside the Mandalay Bay resort.
Sources tell us there are over 7,000 attendees this year, and nearly 300 exhibitors — which kind of beats the pants off the already-overwhelming 185 companies that exhibited at the ADA conference in June. Why the gap? Educators…

My buddy Manny Hernandez and his team at the non-profit Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF) — publishers of the social media health networks Tudiabetes.org and EsTuDiabetes.org — have scored again! In a very big way!
They’ve just announced being awarded a $150,000 grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, the same organization that is funding a new national registry for type 1 diabetes.
