These days, it seems like scholarships, internships and diabetes-focused jobs and careers are much more visible than they used to be for young adults living with diabetes.
A news story that caught our eye recently involved a Southern attorney and fellow type 1, Byron David, who’s stepping up to help the younger generations of PWDs (people with diabetes) further their education. Last month, I attended a meeting with the Helmsley Charitable Trust folks in New York, brainstorming with some community leaders on how we can best work together to make life better for people with type 1 diabetes everywhere. When we reported last summer about the Helmsley Charitable Trust developing an open national registry for type 1 diabetes, we were envisioning some kind of dry database, or perhaps a big listing of sorts like ClinicalTrials.gov. We sure as heck weren’t expecting the kind of social media “wow factor” that Helmsley has infused into its new site, MyGlu.org. Check it out:

My buddy Manny Hernandez and his team at the non-profit Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF) — publishers of the social media health networks Tudiabetes.org and EsTuDiabetes.org — have scored again! In a very big way!
They’ve just announced being awarded a $150,000 grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, the same organization that is funding a new national registry for type 1 diabetes.
