Why is it that some of life’s biggest “no-brainers” are often not obvious to the people they effect most? In this case I’m thinking of professionals in the healthcare industry, who talk about “patients” with a strange kind of distance, as if they themselves didn’t have health issues and need to see doctors sometimes — as if we folks with chronic illness were fundamentally of one single, stubborn mind. Slowly but surely, using the Internet for your health needs is becoming as mainstream as shopping on the web: no longer futuristic, but is it for everyone? And perhaps more importantly, are mainstream commercial health platforms from companies like Google and Microsoft really useful for people with specific chronic illnesses? Per Friday’s post, last week I attended the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s big event on health design in Washington, DC. The day-long conference was a forum for nine design teams to showcase new technology-based health tools they’ve developed over the last two years under a special grant program called Project HealthDesign.

I’m just blown away to witness the continued growth of the diabetes online community. Many of us who’ve been intensely plugged in for a while are stretching ourselves beyond blogging these days, exploring new ways to share and help each other out. You think the economy is bad? Maybe, but the tsunami of new companies creating health/medical tools on the web continues unhampered. A few to highlight today:
* HealthyDirectorymoz.com — a comprehensive directory of health and medical websites. It currently lists 907 active websites that you can look up under a variety of categories.
