At my endo appointment last week, the good woman reminded me that she hadn’t seen my “full-body” test results for a while: my most recent eye exam, mammogram and pap smear. This turned out to be a good reminder, as the former two were last done a full year ago and it was time to reschedule (sigh). What a pain! More appointment-making and driving around and time out of my schedule for unpleasant tests.

When former “Good Morning America” anchor Joan Lunden, who is now a paid spokeswoman for PassportMD, was recently interviewed by ABC News about “the new world of online medical records, one of the first things she said was: “Ten years from now we’ll laugh that we were even having this conversation, because everybody will keep their family’s health records online.”

All this talk about “Health 2.0” and the “power of the healthcare consumer” only makes sense if we patients really do have choices. And lots of us still feel that we don’t. We’re either stuck with whatever our insurance provider dictates, or we don’t have the time/money/resources to really drive our own medical treatment.

The diabetes online community has come a darn long way in just a few short years. Today, Nov. 9, was dubbed the official “Annual Diabetes Blog Day” by Gina Capone of the Talkfest back in the “early days” of 2005.
