It’s been 10 years since I participated in the second JDRF Children’s Congress in 2001 and I am absolutely amazed at how much JDRF’s biannual event has grown and changed. The Children’s Congress is an action-packed event in Washington, D.C., with legislative meetings and testimony, and it has grown also to feature some of the most famous names in diabetes advocacy, like Crystal Bowersox and Nick Jonas.

This year, and among the thousands of ueber-athletes striving for Gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics, there’s one ueber-diabetic. His name is Kris Freeman, and he’s a star cross-country skier, poised to break the USA’s decades-old “Olympic medal drought” in that sport — and also the first-ever athlete with Type 1 diabetes to compete in an Olympic endurance event.
