The 2012 Big Blue Test campaign is open for business. That’s the huge international online “glucose test-in” organized by Manny Hernandez and his team at the Diabetes Hands Foundation. It emphasizes the importance of exercise with diabetes, and just as last year, if the campaign hits its goal of of 20,000 entries, the program sponsor (Roche Accu-Chek) will donate $100,000 to charitable D-organizations.

It’s officially National Diabetes Awareness Month as of today, Nov. 1 — so get out your blue and start celebrating/advocating!! We’re excited to kick off the month by hosting Best of the ‘Betes Blogs awards for the previous month, October. We were wowed to receive nearly 40 nominations!

Michelle Page Alswager is a long-time diabetes advocate, whose mission has taken on new meaning since the sudden and tragic passing of her son, Jesse, in February of this year at only 13. Michelle is a former Executive Director for the Western Wisconsin chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, but continues to volunteer and participate in their Ride to Cure Diabetes, as well as working with the group Triabetes, a triathlon club for PWDs. …

In the past few weeks, the diabetes community has suffered several tragedies in losing young people to diabetes. It is shocking and upsetting when diabetes takes the life of anyone, but somehow more so when it cuts a young life so short.
