Partnerships between multiple universities or institutions are not so uncommon in research, but when’s the last time you heard of an entire state coming together to cure a disease? Earlier this month, the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic, together forming the Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics, announced a formal 10-year-long partnership to cure diabetes which they’ve named, “Decade of Discovery: A Minnesota Partnership to Defeat Diabetes.”

I get loads of questions about where to find discounted meds and other diabetes supplies. Especially over at the DiabeticConnect community, costs are one of the hottest topics. Until now, I’ve been referring folks to Patient Assistance Programs, neglecting the fact that if you have a little bit of cash on hand, you can get your D-stuff for amazing prices at your local Wal-Mart.

A few weeks ago, our community was shocked to learn that one of the most respected D-bloggers, Scott Johnson, was let go from his company. Although losing a job for anyone in this economy is a hard blow, it is especially worrisome for those of us with a serious, chronic medical condition like diabetes — which requires expensive constant monitoring, daily medications and regular visits with the doctor.

I realize there are a lot of folks out there struggling to pay for the basic supplies and medications they need to care for their diabetes. The high cost is one of the shittiest things about having this shitty disease, if you’ll excuse my candor.
