It’s the little stuff with diabetes they don’t tell you about that sometimes gets you down, right? Like grappling with skin irritations and finding test strips stuck in places they do not belong (thx Scott!).

Whether you were diagnosed at age 4 or 14, dealing with diabetes when you hit college is a struggle for anyone. From late-night pizza parties, to erratic school schedules to the inevitable encounters with alcohol, diabetes in college is nothing if not chaotic. When I was attending school, I didn’t have much support, which is why I can vouch for the fact that the new Students with Diabetes organization is so important.

Lots of organizations are working on new ways to accomplish islet cell transplantation in which the immune system does not kill off the transplanted cells. If they could do that, we’d likely have a cure for diabetes. But it ain’t easy, especially because we’re talking about transplanting into people whose immune systems are in mega-attack mode to begin with (type 1 diabetics).
The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) in Florida is currently working on this challenge…
