Hard to believe we’re already a quarter of the way through 2013! This Spring hasn’t exactly been a warm one for many of us, and some of us (like me) are staring out the window at snow right now. My dad has hypothyroidism, as does my grandmother. For my whole life, my dad has taken a tiny little pill every morning to make sure his metabolism functions properly. The relative accuracy of blood glucose meters has of course been in the spotlight of late, since the FDA held a hearing to “crack down” on this issue last Fall. Funny, but I always assumed this had more to do with the technology inside the meter than the test strips themselves. Silly me.

Dr. Stephen Ponder, who has Type 1 diabetes himself, has been a pediatric endocrinologist for 20 years. He is director of the Children’s Diabetes and Endocrine Center of South Texas at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.
