Having lived with type 1 for close to four decades now, Gina Gaudefroy has seen her share of news stories and articles about the latest research and technology relating to diabetes.
She was diagnosed at age 12 when living in Ireland, back in a time that many of us refer to as “the dark ages of diabetes.” Her sister also has diabetes, and her 21-year-old son Sean-Michael was diagnosed about four years ago.

When he was just a kid during the ’60s and ’70s, Evan Kramer saw both his older brother and sister diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. But he didn’t learn much about the chronic condition at the time, because his siblings didn’t talk about their diabetes and his parents seemed to shield him from knowing more.

Who are the A1c Champions? They’re kind of like a traveling DOC — a group of advocates around the country who volunteer to give motivational talks to groups of PWDs. The program is open to anyone, sponsored by Sanofi-Aventis, and totally worth getting involved in if you have any interest in D-mentorship!
To become a Champion, you just to need to have an A1c of under 7% and a history of successful diabetes self-management —…

Who knows about the A1C Champions, a nationwide diabetes mentoring program sponsored by Sanofi-Aventis?
All I knew until recently was that a group of volunteers from around the country — including the great Riva Greenberg — were being trained to give pep talks to groups of other patients. That’s basically the program in a nutshell, but it’s so much cooler than it sounds!
