They say that necessity is the mother of invention. Such is the case with Carolyn Jäger, a 36-year-old New Hampshire-based wife and mom, who grew up with a younger sister with type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed herself at age 13 — on her mom’s birthday (ouch!). Pricking our fingers multiple times a day isn’t exactly something most of us get excited about, but I’ve discovered that some folks out there do get excited about the lancing device they use. While most of us use the lancer that came for free with our meter (i.e. we don’t give it much thought), there are a couple of brand-name models that really seem to get people talking. They are the ACCU-CHEK Mutliclix from Roche…

Pelikan Sun was the ‘Cadillac’ of diabetes lancing systems — with everything that implies: excellent performance, a high-end chassis, yet expensive and impractical for most people. But for some (especially parents of type 1 kids) it was a life-altering product: a way to prick your finger a dozen times a day without feeling a thing!
When the company went out of business a few months ago, I started referring people to the Renew Lancing system…
