This week’s Diabetes Forum 2009 conference was two full days of presentations on policy and reform — a dizzying array of statistics and political jargon and acronyms like “four-tier formularies,” “SNPs” and “VBID” and “double-digit Medicare margin.” Surely all very important stuff in the netherworlds of managed care and reimbursement administration. But what the heck?! I gladly reminded this crowd that these terms mean little if nothing to the average patient.

I’m in New York at the moment (hi Mom!). Yesterday I took part in a very interesting gig put together by the Consumer Reports Health organization, the folks who bring you practical ratings on everything from running shoes to “best buy drugs.” It was a small gathering of health bloggers, online experts and journalists organized expressly to “encourage an interactive discussion bout consumer-driven healthcare and how health bloggers have transformed health communication.” Hmmm, I suppose…

A health care plan that is welcoming to diabetics and also affordable has long been on our wish list. So you might say the PWDs of this country are getting a late Christmas present here with UnitedHealthcare’s announcement of the first-ever health plan designed specifically for diabetics and pre-diabetics — with built-in self-care incentives that will save us money.
