Growing up as a CWD (child with diabetes), some of my favorite memories are of diabetes camp. Just like regular camp, we had swimming, arts & crafts, and singing around campfires. But we also had “checks & shots,” carb counts for all our food, and midnight and 3 a.m. wake-up calls for testing glucose levels. May is a busy-busy month. Among many other observances, it is national “Exercise is Medicine Month,” celebrating the role of fitness in keeping us healthy. We had a sense this was coming for a while, but now it’s official: the Diabetes Exercise & Sports Association (DESA) is merging with Insulindependence (IN) to become what they say is North America’s largest nonprofit public benefit organization focused on diabetes and exercise.
A merger announced Monday means DESA will be no more, and from now on all the programs will operate completely under the Insulindependence name and corporate structure, based in San Diego.…

When we recently received an email from Stand Up Paddleboard surfer Paul Zacharias, our first thought was: “Stand up paddleboard surfing? What the heck is that?” Our second thought was, “This type 1 guy is 47 years old and doin’ battle with the waves — wow!”
