Our previous dog was getting very good at alerting for hypo events. We have not yet started training our new one, but will.

Very helpful and with 99% of the consumer meters on the market being not that great, a back up of a diabetes alert dog is like extra insurance.

When I got my dog as a puppy 3 years ago, I noticed he learned the difference between my boyfriend and I through his nose. He spent a lot of time smelling my insulin pump, and I think that smell distinguished me from my boyfriend. Last summer, I had my first epic low and could not wake up. Luckily, my dog woke me by barking and scratching my face. I had many, many scratches, but he lead me downstairs to get food, and I was able to avoid calling an ambulance.

I’ve had type 1 for 25 years, and my goofy chihuahua-looking mutt saved my life. :-)
