One year when I was overwhelmed with zucchini, I took a huge bag to the local drop-in shelter, which gives out food. They were thrilled because they said their clients don’t often get fresh food.

So if anyone has a garden and is getting a surplus of something, you could donate it to your local food bank if they’ll take such things. Cucumbers and tomatoes, which don’t require cooking, would be a nutritious addition to a diet of Vienna sausages and pizza and a better use of the stuff than throwing it on the compost pile.

Perhaps the issue is not Awareness, but Acceptance. If we are becoming a third of the population, then what we do, how we live, who we are should come out of the shadows, free from judgement and blame. We should be able to eat how we need to eat, buy our supplies in the corner store, do what we do, and get on with our lives with the rest of the world. It should be as easy and blamefree as buying reading glasses when one’s arms grow too short.

I do wish that more medical professionals were aware of what diabetes is and isn’t. They need much more than 6 hours of outdated information. 6 credit hours every 5 years in the latest scientific advances would be better preparation.
