We are halfway through D-Blog Week, and today’s theme is “10 Things I Hate About Diabetes.” Pretty self-explanatory!
When I heard about this theme, I immediately flashed back to the classic teen comedy of a similar name, starring Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger. Who remembers that emotional climactic scene in which Julia reads her “hate poem” to Heath (which gives the movie its name)?
Of course, I just had to do some digging for the original transcript of the poem, and then put my own D spin on it. Hope you enjoy!
10 Things I Hate About Diabetes
(with acknowledgment to the screenwriters of the movie, 10 Things I Hate About You)
I hate the way you follow me,
and the way you change from day to day
I hate the way you won’t let me be
I hate it when you put me in a bind
I hate your sneakiness and your laziness
and the way you cloud my mind.
I hate you so much it makes me sick;
it even makes me rhyme.
I hate the way you make me scared
I hate it when you do the opposite of everything I try
I hate it when you make me feel so unprepared
even worse when you make me cry.
I hate it when you trip me up after doing everything I could
and the fact I can’t get over you.
But mostly I hate the way you’ve also brought me good.
The DOC,
my friends,
my family.

Awesome, Allison. We are all such 90s children.
Nice!
That was a cute spin on the 10 Things list!!!
And yup, we are half way through the week already?? It’s flying by!
Very good poem and I hate all of those things too!
LOVE the way you did this one! I love that movie too.
I feel like a new age “The Secret” follower when I think of all the good things diabetes has brought into my life. It infuriates me. The goopey truth is, diabetes has been such a huge gift. I embarassed even to write that.
I love how you end on the positive. I’m soooooooooooo thankful for the DOC. It’s been incredibly beneficial for me.
That being said, I could probably do a list of ten like this once a week and not re-post a “hate” for a good calendar year.
Good one, Mike! I’m with you on that.
