This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending a really special type of diabetes event, just for the gals! The DiabetesSisters Weekend for Women conference in Raleigh, North Carolina, hosted almost 100 women from 20 states, who convened for two intense days of learning, bonding, and lots of fun. I had never been to a women-only conference before, so it was something new from many angles: a unique opportunity to spend time discussing the challenges of being a woman (with diabetes!), from our hormones and physical challenges to the unique demands on a woman as a daughter, mother, wife, partner, and friend.
Although we “live” online, we in the DOC often talk about the potent power of in-person gatherings with other people with diabetes, and this was no different. It was a truly wonderful experience to meet with just women, all of whom are striving to balance their physical health with their mental health as we juggle the many demands of life (with diabetes!).
Check out this video from my time with the Sisters:
NOTE: the next DiabetesSisters conference is coming up this October in San Diego. For more information, visit their website.

I’ve just arrived in Singapore after a 23 hour flight. It’s 3 AM although i’m not sure what day, and it’s a delight to look at the little time capsule u captured Allison. It takes me right back to Raleigh, and more importantly, to all the curious, open-hearted, generous and exceptional women who were there.
Thanks, Allison, for sharing the meaningful events of the Weekend for Women conference. Those of us in attendance left better educated, uplifted in spirt and connected to so many awesome women who have diabetes.
Sounds like a fantastic event, and I’m so glad that so many of my friends could go.
