In memory of those who have lost their battle with diabetes…
For a long a time, many of us in the Diabetes Community have been wishing there were a place to honor Loved Ones and Friends who’ve been taken away by this disease. I personally have been toying with the idea for several years, but somehow never got around to making it happen.
Luckily, I recently ran into Barbra Marche of the Canadian-based site DiabetesAdvocacy, and the two of us decided to collaborate to make this online memorial site a reality: www.OurDiabetesMemorial.com
{To be clear, this is a pretty simple, grassroots effort with no commercial strings attached.}
This memorial, run by the community for the community, aims to turn the spotlight on those who’ve succumbed to diabetes-related complications. In addition to commemorating the victims, the purpose of ‘Our Memorial’ is to make an inspirational statement: in theory, diabetes is one of the few otherwise fatal diseases that can be optimally managed in order to avoid or minimize long-term consequences. Hence, in a perfect world, no one would have to suffer the worst that diabetes can do.
Also, please note that we consider this site a community-based work-in-progress: if you have suggestions, ideas, or would like to get involved in any way — please be in touch!
If you have lost someone to diabetes, please go to the site and add your Loved One. It’s as simple as sending an email message with a couple of lines of information, and attaching one or more images of your choice. Feel free to celebrate the person’s life in verse if you like, or by submitting photos including family and friends.
The core message here — especially in light of National Diabetes Awareness Month — is that we will never forgot those we’ve lost, and that …
from this day forward, no one should have to die because of diabetes.

This is a great idea, and even greater to see it come from the community without some underlying commercial interests.

As much as I hate that there is a need for a place like this, thank you for creating it so that we can all together honor those who should be remembered. My request has been sent!
What a wonderful idea. It will be a place to remember those we’ve lost, as well as a reminder of the importance of a cure. Thanks for doing this.
This is very special….a wonderful tribute indeed.
