Happy Independence Day, All. I hope you too are enjoying the long weekend. We’ve (finally) got some killer summer sunshine here in the Bay Area. Plus a nice rib cookout and some fab fireworks last night.
I’m still recovering from my week in Orlando, FL, where I attended both the annual ADA Conference, and for the very first time, Jeff Hitchcock’s wonderful CWD Friends for Life event. I thought y’all might enjoy these snapshots of each, taken spontaneously with my iPhone:
ADA 2010
Children with Diabetes Friends for Life 2010
It just so happens that I’m kind of a geek, so I enjoy all the new technology, research and clinical stuff at ADA. But let’s be honest, which event looks like more fun to you? ![]()

I hope to make it to CWD with my daughter next year. Of course she wants to go to Disney!
I attended CWD for the first time, though I’m an adult with Type I (for almost 38 years now.) I would personally recommend that EVERY child with diabetes who is able attend the CWD Friends for Life conference. It was an amazing experience. Picture everyone with a wrist band (green = diabetic,) (orange = sibling or parent of a diabetic) and (?yellow = celiac.) Then all the food (paid for mostly by the vendors of diabetes supplies and pumps) put on buffet tables (some designated celiac) and with every item of starch having its carbohydrate count labeled. Those kids (AND teenagers) were having a blast with all the activities (and a final bash lasting till midnight!)
Those are some great photo captures. I love how CWD manages to combine the scientific stuff WITH the fun stuff so I feel like I get the best of both worlds!
I agree with June – every person with type 1 deserves an opportunity to experience CWD Friends For Life. It is a very empowering and encouraging conference, and I’m determined to find a way back every year!
