Hi Amy – Lovely post, and indeed where would we be if it werent for some brave and ambitious scientists very many years ago? I thought I would add a little bit extra to this story for anyone who is interested… At the World Diabetes Congress recently a medical historian gave a lecture about the discovery of insulin. He noted that in fact a Hungarian Dr Paulescu was the first to isolate insulin – he also told a story that when Banting first presented his research, he was so nervous he couldnt finish the talk and Dr Best had to jump in to help! Excellent post!

This summer we organized a ride across Canada for Juvenile Diabetes research. Cyclists from across Canada rode, relay style, on a tandem bike for 23 days. And let’s thank, too, the dogs who aided in the discovery of insulin therapy. For many years I kept a picture on the wall of Drs. Banting and Best with the first dog to receive insulin. We owe them all!
