I started riding my bike to / from work 4 or 5 days a week in November 2008. My total mileage each day is only about 6 miles, and that’s broken into 4 separate segments with a train ride in the morning and evening. I’m only ever actually pedaling for about 15 minutes at a time, max. I ride fast, though, keeping my pedal cadence high and working up a sweat. Since then I’ve lost 10lbs and my A1C has dropped from 8.0+ to about 6.8. I’ve never felt healthier and these are the best A1Cs I’ve had in the 20 years that I’ve been Type 1.

Exercise wasn’t the only change; my job is also less stressful than it once was, I’m slightly more careful about what I eat (I crave less junk food now that I’m exercising more… something about feeling healthier), and my new Animas Ping really does help me keep more precise control. Even with some other changes, a little bit of aerobic exercise every day has changed my life. I love biking and have been taking longer rides on the weekends, including 35 miles for the Tour de Cure this past July. Its great to turn down my basal rates by 30-40% while I’m working out and have excellent bloodsugars for many hours after each ride.

    Great source!!!
I hearing that they found a correlation between elevated blood glucose levels and reduced cerebral blood volume, or blood flow, in the dentate gyrus, an indication of reduced metabolic activity and function in that region of the brain.

I am one of those whose BS rises on rides. I start the morning with 105, I eat rice pancakes and 1 TBS almond butter, I take my normal insulin shot. My first hour is great, BS are around 150, when they start to drop I take in Jelly Belly sports Beans since I can control the sugar one by one. Yesterday BS started to drop and I took 4 sports beans (~ 2 carbs each) l, BS in the 2nd hour rises to over 300. It stays there pretty much until after I am done with the ride. I would really like to be able to keep my sugars under 200 during any ride since I feel much stronger. It appears that as the ride level increases (6% – 15% grade climb) so does my BS. Any suggestions… My current rides are usually 4 hours in length on the weekends and I commute 21miles 2 – 3x a week. HELP!
