The Ultimate Exercise Pack: There’s Nothing to It

Have you also long been in search of a pack you can strap on during exercise that will actually hold the essentials you need for your diabetes? Hold your stuff in place, I mean, without bouncing? It seems someone finally invented one, and I kid you not, there’s practically nothing to it — just a slip of expandable fabric in the middle.

The Spibelt (Small Personal Items belt) was invented by a woman named Kim Overton a few years ago, and has recently caught the attention of the diabetes community — a group most desperately in need of a good sport-pack solution. A contact of mine sent me one to look at, unsolicited, and I was quite surprised when I upacked the box and saw a little squish of material in the middle of a belt that, when empty, didn’t look like it could hold more than a few Kleenex.

By doing a little Googling, I found out that the Triabetes gang is all over this flimsy little pack (Spibelt is a sponsor), not only because it is so small, but because it WORKS.

By that I mean I was able to stuff my iPhone, a vial of glucose tabs, a $5 bill, and my ever-so-essential lip balm into this thing and run comfortably for a full hour without any bouncing or slippage. I’m no triathlete or marathoner, but I like to work out often, and it’s always annoying trying to figure out which pocket or pack will fit what — without it being too bothersome during the workout. This thing just expands to fit your stuff (don’t go crazy) and stays put nicely. Here’s a testimonial from another diabetic runner who likes it too.

So there’s my Friday product plug.  Sometimes you just can’t help being enthusiastic when something so useful shows up on your doorstep unexpectedly.

btw, if you purchase the black model with the bright orange zipper, the company contributes $1 to the Triabetes group.

  1. oh, the parents at CWD are way ahead of you Amy – we discovered these last year and Kim, bless her heart, started making small kid sized packs just for us. :)

    These are GREAT packs. Amazing!

  2. Yup, Michelle, I realize CWD’ers are already fans; still figured lots of adult PWDs like myself might like the tip.

  3. Kim is great! She is so supportive of Triabetes and the diabetes community and the product is perfectly suited. There are other variations of the spibelt, with extra pockets, or to be worn on the arm. It can also double as a race number belt for running races, triathlons or whatever else. I like to take my meter out of its case and throw it in there with a couple of GU’s when I go for a run…And I often just carry it around with me to keep track of diabetes odds-and-ends.

  4. I use one from Diabetes Mall, which is also awesome!

The pump slides in the back side and my testing supplies/shot blocks go in the front.

    It’s at: http://www.diabetesnet.com/ishop/product_info.php?cPath=45&products_id=194

    Well worth the money!

  5. Wow, never seen anything like that and have never thought about the need for one, but this is great! great idea and think you for posting it and spreading the word

  6. CAN SOME ONE GIVE ME A GOOD IDEA FOR TRAVELING? I AM GOING TO BE ON A PLANE FOR MOST OF A DAY. I MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE FOOD ON BOARD (AGGGG) WHAT KIND OF CONTAINER CAN I USE TO PUT FOOD IN, ? IT WILL HAVE TO BE ABLE TO KEEP THINGS COLD AND NOT BE HEAVY. OH I LEAVE ON THE 12TH ( NO RUSH)

  7. This looks good! I’m on my way to place an order…

  8. Great idea and great article – I have spoke to many people looking for something similar to this for hiking or running. Great to have!!

  9. I love the SPIBelt! I bought one when they were selling them at a local race last year. I love it even more that its inventor and the business are based in the best town (and my hometown) in the south (Austin, TX!). I was skeptical at first because I didn’t believe I really could stuff all the things I like to take with me on my jogs, but it goes way beyond my expectations.

The kid’s versions are really cute too!

  10. Discovered this at the Long Beach 1/2 Marathon in 2007. Great product. I buy a new one each year. BTW, you can clip your pump to the belt.
