I was thinking about how you don’t see so many bumper stickers on cars these days. A few, to be sure, but during recent elections I noticed that folks seemed very hesitant to advertise their political views on their automobiles. Oddly, I felt the same way, even though I’m part of this new tidal wave of people willing to “put it all out there” on the Internet.

I know Phil Southerland wouldn’t want me to call him a hero, but I can’t help myself. He has achieved what many thought impossible: creating a team of competitive cyclists with type 1 diabetes on track to become world-class. His efforts in recruiting athletes for Team Type 1, finding pharmaceutical sponsors, training like a maniac, and yet still finding time for motivational speaking around the country are beyond inspirational for people with diabetes everywhere. Is it weird to enjoy a holiday that’s focused on ten biblical plagues? But the Jewish festival of Passover is (like so many Jewish holidays) commemorative — a celebration of redemption and hard-won freedom.
