    I am a MM user and I think Cozmo users would be better off using there Cozmo until it dies-then find a pump other than a MM. MM is not a good pump.

    I am jumping on this deal! I left Minimed but my brother is still with them and what a mistake I made. They are always there for him and I want that again. They even had a clinical person meet him at the house to show him how to use advanced features. That’s what’s important.

    The features/setting are a-lot easier to read than the Cosmo.

    The cosmo has way-to many set-up features etc. It’s been recalled 3 times since we have been on it. We are tired it it & THIS opportunity came at a perfect time for us to switch.

    Thanks Amy…I’ve requested the info on this. Been a happy Cozmo pumper for 6 yrs and have a couple yrs warrantly left on my current pump. Was hoping to take a little more time to let the idea of changing sink in and then do the comparisons between Animas and Minimed (not interested in the Omnipod at this point), but this offer looks pretty attractive.

    I have only ever used the OmniPod (from January 2007 – January 2008) and the MiniMed Paradigm 522 with Real-Tiime CGM (from January 2008 – present) and I must say that those Cozmo users should really give MiniMed a try. The CGM is infinitely more accurate than the DexCom (which I tried for one month) and the MiniMed folks are there 24/7 to assist you. For all the bad hype they’ve gotten, I think it is undeserving. I am SO glad I have my MiniMed Paradigm 522 with Real-Time CGM and I urge you to switch over. If your insurance won’t cover the sensors all the time, consider wearing them from time to time. You won’t regret it!

    Depending on what featuers a Cozmo user may use, a switch to Medtronic may be a huge step back in time. Their pumps haven’t had any significant updates in about 4 years now. The Animas pump would be the closest equivalent with features to a Cozmo. I’m a Cozmo user and have played with a Minimed and have used an Animas and will say the Minimeds are severely lacking on pump features. I think this is just a gimic for them to pull more people over. The thing is though, Cozmo users have nothing to worry about for at least four years as the company is still guaranteeing all warranties and all their infusion sets can be bought elsewhere.

    I have an Animas pump and a MM CGM. I’ve been less impressed with MM customer service, personally. I’m approaching my 5th anniversary on an Animas, and have been very happy with them – the customer service and the pump. I’m looking forward to the combined Animas/Dex-Com system so I can be done with MM. Regardless of my experience though, I can appreciate the disappointment and frustration that Cozmo users are facing. I know I’d be crushed if I had to relinquish my Animas. It’s hard to conceive of letting it go.

    Comparing MM pumps to a Cozmo is like comparing Kraft Dinner to a steak. MM pumps are heavily marketed, but poor quality.
    They are ‘old school’, in other words.

    Cozmo screens are easy to read/use/program, there is an insulin on board screen, you can access complete history from the main menu (MM requires you to hook up your pump to a computer to find info like how much insulin you filled your reservoir with, or a % breakdown of daily totals), the Cozmo is waterproof (MM lost its waterproof designation from the FDA due to design flaws, but used ‘no pump is waterproof’ propaganda to avoid telling you this), looks more like a cellphone than a 1980s pager (MM looks like it belongs on Miami Vice), and you can use ANY set with the Cozmo. With MM, you are stuck using ONLY MM products. Heaven forbid you need emergency supplies and no MM infusion sets can be found. Cozmo gave me excellent customer service, including getting me a replacement pump in 9 hours after placing a 3 am call.

    MM has horrible customer service, with people who are clueless, and pushy crazy sales people and pump trainers.

    MMs CGMS is inaccurate, expensive, and sucks. The cost is high for a product that provides little benefit. A CDE told me yesterday that most T1s who use the CGMS send it back. I have used a MM 522 pump with CGMS and it is a terrible system. I have had 5 ‘no delivery ‘ alarms in 1 month alone. The CGMS has left scars on my abdomen and is so inaccurate that I can’t use it.

    RIP Cozmo. Smiths, your product was fabulous, and I’m sorry it was overshadowed by MMs marketing team.

    If the Coz is truly dead, go Animas. I’m not sure on the Omipod yet, as I’ve never seen one.

    I think it’s safe to say after reading the comments here and over on another forum that every pump user has different experiences with the models and companies and therefore develops some biasness. It’s disheartening to read comments like Frusterated’s above saying that MM’s CGM sucks and all the other bashings because it’s simply not a fair representation of the company or pump as a whole and I’m sorry for your bad experiences. However, like June above and many many other pumpers, I absolutely love my Minimed and their customer service has been nothing but efficient and great to me. I think it’s very nice of Medtronic to step up and offer this deal and hopefully people wanting to change pumps will give it a serious look and consideration since it’s not a deal that comes around every day.

    i dont want this to come across as sounding rude, but in general I could really care less about customer service. To me, a company that touts it’s customer service too much tells me they make a poor product and you will thus need their “excellent” service. Being on a pump for about 6 years (4 with Minimed and now 2 with Cozmo) I have called customer service for support probably a total of about 3 times.

    I personally would be very reluctant to go back to Mini-med. I had numerous bad batches of infusion sets and got the dreaded “no delivery” far more than I should have. Since switching to Cozmo that problem has largely been eliminated. I also definitely love the customization options on the Cozmo. I dont understand why you wouldn’t want to customize that much. Everyone’s diabetes is different…

    At least blogs like this give you some data about what the offer is before you hand over info and get inundated by the over aggressive morally challenged MM sales force.

    Just for reference,for years I’ve been using (and still am) a MiniMed 508 pump. I’ll have to admit that the service was better before Medtronic got involved, but I still get good service, in general, from the Minimed folk.

    My pump has worked flawlessly for all the years I’ve owned it, Minimed has overnighted “hold-over” supplies until the uncooperative health-insurance companies authorized my purchase (and also when the then worthless Durable-goods people over at Beaver Medical in Redlands,CA forgot I’d put in a refill order).
    I agree, the Medtronic sales force can be worse than used-car salesmen, but all in all I’ve been very pleased with my 508 pump and the customer service from Minimed.

    When you are able to find out (ie the writer possibly in her blog or someone else in the comments) can someone explain how the promotion actually works. I can’t tell from the website. I mean are they going to trade me my pump with 5 or 6 months of warranty on it for a current Medtronic with 2 years warranty on it for free ?

    Is anyone else wondering about this warranty math problem:

    I have 3 1/2 years left on my Cozmo warranty, and the company claims they’ll be honoring their warranties. If I were to decide to trade down to a Medtronic pump with only 2 years of warranty, will my insurance be willing to pay for a new pump in 2 years when that warranty expires (essentially 1 1/2 years early) just because I chose to switch pumps? Seems unlikely.

    Personally I don’t feel like my pump system was yanked away from me, since I have a pump, the company has promised to maintain the warranty and keep making reservoirs (right?), and their infusion sets are non-proprietary and widely available. I’m just sorry that there’s one less choice and bummed that this excellent pump isn’t going to be available in the future.

    I’m not a pump user but I wonder how insurance will play into the situation. Because they can save some cash will they essentially force people to take the deal even if it may not be what they want to do?

    On a side note about Medtronic sales people. I was at an expo last year and they had a booth and having never seen a pump and CGM I went and had a look. Even though I was not on insulin at the time I got the whole sales pitch about how great it was, how it was basically an artificial pancreas, no problems playing sports with it, virtually problem free, yadda, yadda, yadda. A few quickly thought of but probing questions turned the pressure back on the salesman who after about 5 minutes went back on most of the claims he made. That it really isn’t close to an artificial pancreas, that the CGM isn’t really that accurate, people who play certain sports can have a lot of trouble with it and the rate of problems with it are not as low as they would like them to be or make out they are. If somebody pushes you, push them back!

    I am a type 1 (22 years) and had been using a minimed 712 up until about 2 years ago. My insurance decided to switch the deductible plans and seperate the durable medical supplies over to a seperate deductible. Now I can’t afford the supplies. I wish they would quit with the marketing stuff and just sell the supplies cheaper.

    Perhaps I’m naive but the only reason a Cozmo user would need to be ‘rescued’ is if Smith’s fails to do what they claim they will do: honor warranties, and continue with supplies. Otherwise, we all still have our pumps – nothing’s been ‘yanked away’. Basically, they are playing on the fear that Smith’s won’t honor their warranties.

    Yes, I know that the Cozmo is being discontinued. My point is that no Cozmo user is waking up today, or in the next 90 days, or (according to Smiths) anytime during their warranty period to find their pump ‘yanked away’ and to find themselves in need of being rescued. If your warranty runs out in the next 90 days (and your insurance wouldn’t otherwise cover a MM pump) this might be an attractive option.

    Otherwise, the only reasons to ditch an in-warranty Cozmo are fear that Smith’s won’t honor their warranty, or regret over choosing Cozmo and wanting to jump over to MM. They are not swooping in to assist, they are workin’ the situation.

    I can fault Medtronic for this marketing tactic. It feels cheesy to me.

    I know Animas is offering support to Cozmo users as well, though nothing on their site about “special deals”.

    My Animas warranty is up and my pump recently died after I forgot to disconnect to shower (ir1250 w/ cracked battery housing). Since I am very interested in the integrated cgms w/ MM and it will be another year at least before Animas has their integrated DexCom, I contacted both companies.

    Susie with Animas brought a couple loaner pumps for me to choose from (pink and silver colors) of the Animas Ping, she is letting me use the loaner until I decide if I want to stay with wonderful, awesome, fabulous, caring, great (IMO) product and company that is Animas. Or if I want to take that walk to the “dark side” (I only say this as I’ve heard more negative comments about MM than positive ones, there is a lucky percentage out there that get a good unit and experience good service when needed) that is MM. Now I also met with the MM rep and all he did was bring the demo models and talk to me like I knew nothing about pumping (even after I specifically told him I’ve use and Animas pump since 2001). All in all I am not impressed with my limited interaction with MM.

    BTW, the MM rep also told me I would get a $500 trade in allowance with my dead Animas pump. So, the deal they are offering Cozmo users doesn’t seem like much of a deal to me cosidering you get a refurbished model and only 2 yr warranty on it (which may or may not be longer than what you have left on your Cozmo) and they don’t specify what the discounted price is but for a refurbished unit I would expect the price to be lower than brand new and the warranty to be less anyway.

    However I am still undecided, not sure I want to wait another 4 years to get a cgms integrated pump…… *sigh*
    I should make up my mind soon, I’ve had the loaner for almost 2 weeks now.

    I spoke to the Minimed rep today. The deal is that they will give you the pump at a discounted price, plus a $500 credit for the pump you trade in. That leaves a balance of $800. You can then get a $200 credit each time you take a survey for Medtronic over the next year. They are giving a 3 month grace period before they bill, during which time you will have a chance to complete a survey and get one $200 credit. So the out of pocket would apparantly be $600, which would then be credited back over the next 3 surveys you complete. Seems fair to me. I am not sure about the warranty part of it. He told me that this is something Medtronic is just rolling out, so I don’t know if they’re permanently going to a 2 year warranty or if you’d be on your own for the rest of the time until insurance would buy a new one.

    I just recently got my 10 year old son an Animas pump after he was on a Medtonic pump for 6 years. Biggest mistake I ever made. I can’t STAND the Animas. Yeah, yeah, the motors work better, whatever. There have got to be twice as many button pushes just to do a bolus, and it is completely un-user friendly. I HATE all the button pushes. It has run out of insulin 3 times in the last 4 months because it gives you one warning, then nothing. I was used to the Medtronic, which kept a constant warning on the screen when there was a problem, so you didn’t forget to change the insulin. Every time I bolus, the numbers just fly by so fast, it takes forever to get to the right number of carbs. I do like the Ping system, and we do bolus using the meter, but I hate that meter because of the large amount of blood required. We’ve always used the Freestyle.

    So I am excited to get rid of this Animas and get my son back on a Minimed. It’s simpler to use for him, and for us. I did have a few problems with pumps and sites, but I had site problems with this Animas too. Some of it is just what I’m used to, but it is just a simple fact that the Animas requires waaaaay more button pushes and I don’t like that. In my experience, the customer service was the same with both companies. In fact, Animas could care less about me – never called or anything.

    If you have questions, call the Medtronic number. They answered all my questions very pleasantly and gave me absolutely no pressure at all. That’s the correct place to find out your answers.

    Hmmm….it is interesting that Medtronic is coming out to save the Cozmo pump users, since they are the ones that drove Smith Medical out of the pump business. Medtronic was suing Smith Medical for “copying” some part of their technology in the Cozmo pump. Because the lawsuit would cost so much, Smith Medical decided it was more cost effective for the company to pull out of the pump business and just stay in the supply business. Very sad that Medtronic cause such a good pump to go away. I am having a hard time even thinking about moving to Medtronic.

    FWIW, Animas is offering Cozmo pump users a deal, too. Cozmo users can get a recertified Animas Ping and 1 month of supplies for $900. If users trade in their Cozmo, they’re offering up to a $700 rebate, which could bring the out-of-pocket cost of the new pump to $200.     Mmm. I’m glad I found this site. This has been a very interesting discussion. I am on my third pump. I started out with a MiniMed 508 then went to a Paradigm (I believe it was the first one) and switched to the Cozmo in December of 2007. I had no problems with customer support from MM when I was on the Paradigm. But what sort of irked me was the fact that I was locked into only one option for infustion sets and only Energizer batteries. When it came time for an upgrade that my insurance allowed I decided to go another route and the Cosmo won out over three others.

    I can’t bring myself to say any pump “sucks”. Everyone is different and can only handle certain designs and pump configurations so as long as the pump keeps one alive and relatively healthy then that is a good thing.

    It has been a good thing to get some many different views on the various popular pumps out there. Each company wants our business so they of course are going to say nothing but good about what they sell. So it has been good for me to hear about experiences from real users of these other options who are not connected with these companies. I had a MM person call me one evening and I was glad to talk to him and got a chance to tell him exactly why I went with Cosmo. There was no pressure on his part and he mostly listened to me asking probing questions now and then.

    I chose the Cosmo because It had all the features I thought I could use. And I have been very pleased with its performance and the help I have gotten from customer support. I like the attachable meter that reads the test scores directly into the pump and will let me know whether I need to consume carbs (with a “suggestion” on how many carbs) to raise my BG up from being too low or a corrections bolus to lower. I had to have the meter replaced because of water damage and I got it replace with no hassle. I like the many alarm options and even have some custom alarms to remind me to take meds in the morning. Although I would say the meal planner isn’t absolutly essential it has been interesting to use and customize. And I have made a concerted effort to use it so I could pass a more qualified judgment on the feature. I like the way I can customize the pump programming on my home computer and upload it to the pump. I realize that is too much work for most people but at least I have the option to use it. I also like all the reports I can get off it. I actually like using the CoPilot software to download report data from the pump to anylize instead of the CozeMore software. That is just me since I like that kind of stuff. And I liked the disconnect feature.

    Now all those positives said I did think the design of the pump was squirly with its odd shape (I guess that is the designer in me wanting some a bit more stylish but when it came to it the functions won out). There have at times seemed like there were a lot of button pushes that needed to happen but, well that has not been a big worry for this user. I have used the Cleo infusion set since I got the Cozmo and have been in the process of finding something else.

    So it is too bad about this pump going under. I think I will wait till the warranty ends and I can qualify for an upgrade through my insurance. Even with the discounts being offered by MM for a refurbished pump that is still too much money to dish out and I’m sure my insurance won’t help out. So far I think I’m going to stay put with what I have.

    I would first have to agree with Steven that it has been very interesting to read all the comments.
    As a dad of an active 8 year old who has been on the Cosmo pump for 3 years I would have to say that we are also disappointed in the pull out of the pump business for Smith and the Cosmo product.

    We tested three types narrowed down to two the other being MM and went with the Cosmo. I would have to say that we have had three units replaced one which needed new software upgrade (specific errors), one case cracked during baseball game and one because we got the blood glucose monitor sensor wet and it went out. What was important was that Cosmo had a replacement the next day FedEx’d. Service is only needed when it’s needed and one of those times was on vacation in OBX.

    We are parents that heavily manage our sons diabetes and teaches him how too and the Cosmo features that Steven talked about before will be sorely missed if we can not find any comparison.
    The various alarms, various basal settings, the food charts are the best especially for a growing and active boy. We also use the CoPilot software for the ease of reading use and to IR tool to download his numbers to his Endo’s office. My wife loves the ability to change all his settings online then just upload those to the pump and his is back off and running with little downtime.

    We have talked with both Animas and MM about their deals and we are blessed to have great insurance and with two years left on the Cosmo we will ride it out for now and work with our Endo and our Diabetes Care Center team to again find the best for our son. Quality and functionality are the top two concerns right now.

    Like before we will treat it like a project and first determine what our requirements are. I hope my comments help as much as yours did and remember that your health and management is most important until a cure is found. My son wants to be a scientist and doctor to find a cure. God bless that boy and steer him in the direction for your plan.

    NOTE to Steven. We use the Accu-Check Rapid D infusion set instead of the Cleo with the Cosmo as it has a metal needle and stood up better to the intense activity of my son. For us the infusion set might have a heavy weight in decision making.

    I agree with some of the posters here who said that a move from Cozmo to MM would be a step back in time. I moved from the Paradigm 715 (wasn’t interested in the 722 because I’m a Nav user and didn’t care about their CGM) to the Cozmo 1800 in July of 2008 and have felt jettisoned into the 21st century. It has had a lot more to offer me in terms of features and functionality than the MM Paradigm series ever had. I have 3 years and 9 months left on my warranty and am looking at the “jump ship and come to us” deals from Animas, MM, and Omnipod with a healthy touch of skepticism and a little bit of longing. I don’t know what I’ll do yet, but my CDE says that I have a great new pump and that I should stay put for now. I have been thinking of moving to Omnipod, but their switchover deal is for a 1st gen PDM and the new PDM is coming out this summer (rumored), so I would have upgrade costs associated with that ANYWAY.

    But yeah, no MM switcheroo for me. My CDE also warns that the most MM’d give me is a 2 year warranty in exchange for my 3+ years left on my Smiths warranty.

    I have been a Cozmo user for about 5 years. I just jumped over to the Minimed for this offer.
    I loved my Cozmo and miss it.
    The Minimed is far too complicated, not user friendly, not water-proof, terrible screen display, and doesn’t have the simple nice features that the Cozmo has.
    Minimed needs to upgrade their technology. I’m thinking pumps need to go touch screen!
    As for the CGMS – what a rip-off!
    To all Cozmo users, stick with Cozmo until your warranty runs out. I had 3 more years to go, but jumped ship and regret it.

    I’d also like to add that there is no loudness setting for the alarms on MM. The alarms are too quiet for my tastes compared to the Cosmo.
    The Cozmo cell-phone like ease of use made it great!

    I am a devoted COZMO user.

    I bought a BRAND NEW Minimed pump 4 years ago. In the first 14 days I had it, it failed 13 times. I spent hours on the phone with Medtronic, and was told that each failure of the pump was MY fault. Meanwhile, I was trying to balance diabetes after years of a successful regimen of Lantus and Novolog. At that time, Medtronic was interested in reducing their QUALIFIED support staff while selling more defective pumps.

    I sent the pump back to Medtronic. They refused it and FedEx returned it. I called the CEO’s office and told his assistant of my problems with the pump, and with his company. I told them I would hand the pump to the CEO on the golf course the next time we golfed.

    Within one hout, I received calls from the upper echelons of the headquarters in Minnesota, and from the pump hierarchy in California, all promising to do whatever it took to make me a “satisfied customer”. I told them that they had lost that opportunity forever.

    They sent me a letter of apology and a FREE PUMP!!!

    I sent the pump back to them. It took them months to understand that I couldn’t be bought with a cheaply-made, unreliable insulin pump and a their sub-standard “support” people. They never seemed to understand that my life depended on their pump, and their people.

    Medtronic/Minimed understands that making cheap, unreliable pumps and hiring unfortunate people who read from scripts, is the quickest way to make profit. What they never understood is that their business practices drove me away from EVER doing business with Medtronic/Minimed.

    If I somehow got 100 new pumps for free, I would smash each one with a hammer and then recycle the parts. No one should ever have to live with Medtronic or their shoddy products and practices and people.

    That last comment is dead on. Medtronic just had more major recalls on their product.

    The DANA Diabecare pump is another alternative from Sooil. They invented the first portable insulin pump in 1979. The are the only pump company in the world whose CEO is a practicing endocrinologist. Their website is http://www.sooilusa.com. It’s the smallest pump out there and is totally waterproof. I know they have an exchange program, but I have to check the details. I had a chance to play with it and it’s pretty cool.

    Plus, they have a really awesome one with a remote that completely controls all functions of the pump AND has a built in BGM. It is supposed to be available in the US sometime soon.

    I traded my second Cozmo for the MiniMed and at the time, I was reluctant and indicated I wasn’t interested because I had almost 3 years of warranty and Mini Med was offering only 2. this left opportunity that if I dropped the pump and cracked the screen, I was risking over 5 thousand dollars out of pocket. I was told just as others were that there was flexibility and they would stand behind their product for the additional 9 months. Now my biggest fear has come to reality and Medtronic says the warranty expired last June. I’m ok with this because I should have never have trusted this persons assurance so with the 4 year anniversary coming up soon, I wouldn’t take another Medtonic pump no matter what the deal was. They shut your account down over unpaid invoices. their billing dept sent me multiple bills each week and made it very confusing however I was sending payment for what I was invoiced for and they knew this so to shut a 43 year type 1 from ordering supplies is barbaric and not the way to create good will with anyone. Your probably wondering what their side of the story is and I can say it couldn’t be much different than mine. They first billed me an insurance co-pay for a December 2010 order in August 2011 and said the Insurance companies are slow to pay them. I knew this was a lie but I didn’t pay it because I already paid the June placed order co pay s bf the accuracy. My first pump was a MiniMed 508 and for years, I always used their infusion sets on the Cosmo so I was a longtime customer and over a small amount of money, I was banned from service or placing orders for supplies. They extorted payment from me in a thug like fashion so they should all go to hell where they belong.
