The choice of prescription drug, if and when required (and I'm of the belief they are prescribed way too frequently, in doses that are way too strong), should be a collaborative effort between prescriber and patient -- and probably pharmacist, in these times. It should be a dialog. Both doctor and patient should be aware of the potential side effects -- especially adverse side effects -- and contraindications to any proposed drug therapy. In a state such as Type 2 diabetes, the doctor needs to make a case for the particular class of drug s/he is prescribing (this drug works in this manner, which I feel is best for what we see your body doing). Of course, this would require a certain amount of effort from the patient -- not the "gimme a pill to cure it" mentality that so many people seem to have...

Maybe I'm all by myself on this but I want them to try to find out what effect a new drug has on heart disease before they start selling it to my doctor. I also want them to look for the unintended consequences of whatever action the drug has before its advertised on tv. What I really want is for them to quit advertising prescription drugs.
