Thanks for the nice re-cap of our conversation, Amy! And to LaurenK, you are right. The drawing exercise is an oversimplification. Its intent is to provide an overview of all of the components involved with diabetes self-management which include problem-solving and reducing risks. When we do this exercise, we discuss more in detail the American Association of Diabetes Educators 7 Self-Care Behaviors. Our program definitely covers all serious issues related to diabetes management as we are an ADA accredited center. We try to have a little fun along the way. Be well. Theresa

I have to say, this approach would not work for me at all. I would NEED blood pressure pills if someone suggested I draw an apple for healthy eating or a sneaker to represent exercise. I am an adult. That is patronizing, in my opinion. I would be furious if someone spoke to me about my diabetes in oversimplified, childish terms, which has been my problem with educators all along.

I agree Amy, we need many more Theresas!
Her ideas and insights are refreshing. Once again I sit here on the East Coast wondering why I haven't moved to CA yet. ;-)

Thanks for the great post Amy.

Having worked with Theresa on a professional level at dLife, I can agree that people with diabetes definitely need more educators like Theresa. She's something special indeed!
