You know how some foods just instinctively seem low-carb — or appear to genuinely be so, based on the package labels, but somehow aren’t? Isn’t that maddening? Here’s my personal list of dreaded “fake-out foods” that spike my blood sugar when they seem like they shouldn’t:
- protein “shake” drinks [tasty and filling, they're supposedly only 9 grams of carb per an 11 oz. can, but my post-drink blood sugar disagrees with that assessment]

I neglected to mention that smack in the middle of our girls’ big birthday bash last weekend, I tested my glucose and got a whopping 424 (!) — the highest BG result I’ve had since hospitalization at diagnosis. Yikes!! Wait just a minute… this can’t be right. So I scrubbed my fingers with soap and hot water and tried again: 142. Can you believe it?

You guys are absolutely right: the ADA Conference looks like it’s all about oral drugs for Type 2 this year. But that’s impossible, since virtually every organization who’s anybody in the diabetes industry is involved in this annual conference.
