    What did people do before “diabetes education?” Figured it out themselves. And that’s what I think works best. On the occasions I’ve spoken to diabetes educators I’ve found that they grasp only the basics of my disease, and that isn’t always a guarantee. My choices were speaking to an adult educator, who didn’t really understand that grown-ups can be diagnosed with type 1, too, or a pediatric educator, who was unbelievably patronizing and unable to answer any of my in-depth questions. Certainly it’s a mistake to assume that all diabetics can benefit from consultation with a CDE.
