“Faces of Change”: Type 2 Diabetes in Photographs

It was probably just a matter of time until some famous photographer decided to document life with diabetes among the more than 18 million people with Type 2 in this country. Now Novo Nordisk has helped the process along by recruiting Rick Smolan, former Time, Life and National Geographic photographer and creator of the best-selling “Day in the Life” photography series, to do just that.

Faces_of_change Check out FacesofChange, a travelling photo exhibit launched at the annual ADA Scientific Sessions conference that kicked off this weekend. Dozens of photographs tell the stories of how individuals have ” embraced change and taken charge of their diabetes and their life.”

To the change theme, the event materials have this to say: “People with type 2 diabetes face constant change – whether transitioning to a healthy diet, starting or Novo_change_pics_2 maintaining an exercise plan, or altering their medication as the diabetes progresses.”

But I can’t help thinking that part of the campaign is Novo Nordisk itself embracing change — attempting to win back some of the goodwill among patients it lost during recent scandals.

In any case, the exhibit will travel to a number of major cities throughout the year, with a grand finale planned in New York City.

For the “interactive” component of this program, Novo is soliciting submissions from people with Type 2 diabetes; you can send in your own photos and share your personal diabetes success story via the exhibit website. The deadline for submissions is August 30, so get snappin’ if you’re interested.

The winning subjects will be photographed by Smolan himself and featured in the national exhibit. So maybe your chance at Diabetes Stardom — if you can make a compelling case on how you are embracing change.
