Java Fans: You Are What You Drink

Did anyone notice that the ADA (American Diabetes Association) is selling its very own brand of organic coffee called Grounds for A Cause?  Now this is interesting: name-brand coffee from my national advocacy organization.  Wow.

Anticipating Sicko

Coming this June:  A comedy about 45 million people with no health care in the richest country on earth.

And who could possibly be qualified to dig up dirt on drug companies and health-care providers for a blockbuster documentary — by asking his web site visitors to send in their testimonials, no less?  Why Michael Moore, of course.

Tagged For Seven

I’m so very late to this meme (Internet game for sharing personal tidbits) that I could barely remember who tagged me.  But then I stumbled on Scott S. again and it all came back to me.

Endos Honor Adam Morrison

Another quick red flag for American Diabetes Alert Day: the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) has selected outspoken NBA Charlotte Bobcats rookie Adam Morrison for their annual public service award.  Morrison, of course, has  Type 1 diabetes, and recently signed on with LifeScan, Inc. to spearhead their diabetes awareness campaign (see DiabetesandFood.com for all Adam’s tips :).

American Diabetes Alert Day: Read My Flag

Today, March 27th, 2007, is designated by the ADA as American Diabetes Alert Day.  According to the literature, they are “sounding the alert to the 60 million Americans who are unaware they have diabetes or are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes” — which is a very important thing to do, given all those scary statistics:

Armed

So… It’s officially been 5 weeks since I started on the OmniPod, and I finally tried it on my arm.  Armed.  Banded.  Armbanded.  Weird.

Already, I was so accustomed to wearing that box on my stomach that I startle each time I notice my empty abdomen: Where-oh-where has my pump gone?  Have I lost it?  Ah no, the shoulder. That’s right.  It did feel a little achy back there when I wasn’t looking.

In Memoriam, Here Too

Some very sad news today, I’m afraid.  David Mendosa, fellow diabetes journalist who’s been a fixture on the Web for over 10 years now, lost his beautiful wife Catherine Lee Nord on Tuesday.  She was 69.  She died of complications of diabetes.  I have to admit, my heart nearly stopped when I heard this.

KYN Book Update

So what’s it like to be an author?  Somewhat uneventful, so far.  Probably because most of the promotions for our new book, Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes (January ‘07), to date have been here in cyberspace. So it’s more of the tush-in-the-chair kind of diabetes advocacy I’ve grown used to

Holy @#$! Amazing Stories, Vol. 9: Learning by Example

Another amazing email from one more amazing reader! Maureen has been a Type 1 for eight years now, and admits that she did a terrible job taking care of herself for a long time.  “I had the typical reactions everyone else does — crap…why me…this sucks…goodbye… anything chocolate-peanut butter…,” she says.  But after one of her routine tests came up abnormal, she was asked to attend a seminar at a local hospital, which ended up being a huge turning point in her life.  Well…, let’s let her tell it like it was:

Saving Insulin’s History

It’s a piece of Canadian history about to be lost… but also one that underscores the lives of millions of people all over the world, who wouldn’t be here today without the work of Banting and Best and their remarkable discovery …
