A Few Products I Like

It’s a plug fest, folks, but only because I am somehow personally passionate about these items:

1) I wrote about a neat new protective case for Lantus vials recently.  Well now a reader tipped me off to a similar one, available on eBay, apparently designed by a mother whose son wouldn’t let her wrap his bottles of insulin with bubble wrap (not cool, mom! they note). This one looks pretty cool ;)

Larabars_1 2) Have you all discovered Lara Bars yet?  But you must.  Great natural snack bars that do not taste overly sweet.  Flavors I’ve tried: apple pie, ginger snap, lemon, and cashew cookie (my personal fave). They are majorly good!  The list of ingredients will knock you out: cashews, dates, and sometimes almonds. And yes, that sort of stuff makes them gluten-free to boot.  The only drawbacks are they’re NOT low-carb (23g per bar) and I recently realized they contain ~12g of fat per bar.  Ooch. But they sure are naturally yummy.

3) Especially for us PWD-types, Eat Well Be Well Foods.  This company approached me a while back asking if I’d be willing to try some of their sugar-free products.  AlwaysEwbw_oatmeal_1 a skeptic of “diabetic-friendly” foods, I said sure, but with extremely low expectations.  Surprise, surprise!  They sent two boxes of instant oatmeal packs — cinammon and maple flavor — that are absolutely delicious and do NOT throw off my blood sugar for the rest of the day.  Each packet contains only 23g of carb (which is way low for oatmeal), offset by 6g of fiber — and 0g sugar; they use Splenda, aka sucralose*.  I like to add a little almond meal for bulk and protein. Lecker, as we say in German.

They also sent me a box of  Splenda-sweetened chocolate bars that pack in 14g of fiber per 16g of carbs per bar!  That’s unheard-of.  They actually taste pretty rich and authentic, but somehow still aren’t as satisfying as “real” chocolate. It must be all that fiber (?)  I haven’t really been able to accurately measure the effects on my blood glucose of these, because I have a nasty lingering pre-diagnosis habit of wanting to eat my dessert shortly before going to bed.  At least I’m diligent enough to check in the middle of nearly every night nowadays.

* Eat Well Be Well foods likes to brag that their products contain no sugar alcohols, which can cause digestive problems because they are, in essence, indigestible.  So that’s a plus.  But I also know that there’s been a lot of backlash against Splenda.  Is it really unsafe?  The experts debated long and hard. But the FDA stands behind it.  So if you’re up for a “diabetic-friendly” splurge on a few foods generally considered taboo for us, try Eat Well Be Well products.  At least you know they will taste well.  Promise!

    Lara Bars are the best. Yummie and I’ve yet to find anything that gives me the nearly constant wave of energy on my bicycle. Great blog, by the way. Keep up the good work.

    Clif nectar bars are also great. They have all natural ingredients, which do not include any form of straight sugar. (They are sweetened using dates.) For the dark chocolate & walnut bar (my fave), the ingredients are (copied from the website): Organic Dates, Organic Walnuts, Organic Unsweetened Chocolate, Organic Cocoa, Organic Vanilla. They have only 160 calories, including 6 g fat, 27 g carbs (6 g fiber), and 3 g protein. The chocolate/walnut bars are almost always sold out it seems, or close to it. I buy them at Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or Sports Basement (an indispensible Bay Area sporting goods/fitness store).

    My favorite diabetes friendly cereal bar is the Special K Bar.
    They have 90 calories and 16 to 18 gm of Carbs depending on the flavor.

    My son used to love the Hershey’s Smartzone bars. Low glycemic, tasty, 20 something carbs…
    Was having a hard time finding them recently so I emailed Hershey’s. They aren’t making them anymore :(

    I don’t know. I’m not that excited about things that taste sweet any more. Most diabetic treats are so loaded up with artificial sweetener they taste bad. I’d be happy with something that simply had half the sweetener, no matter the source. Frankly, I’d rather have carrot sticks and celery with a little ranch dressing dip. I don’t miss cookies and donuts at all. And most packaged “treats” have never struck me as nearly as good as what I make at home.
