New Sweetener on the Block

Remember my rant on differentiating between the various artificial sweeteners? Well now there’s a new gal on the block, which may actually taste significantly better (?). Say hello to “Sweet Simplicity,” a new erythritol-based product from the Whole Earth Sweetener Co.

Ss_case_1 As my blogfriend Jimmy M. over at Livin’ La Vita Low Carb says: “I know, I know, not ANOTHER SWEETENER, but… (Sweet Simplicity) offers you a pleasantly sweet-tasting sugar alternative that is high-quality, calorie-free, and 100% all-natural.”

Jimmy goes on to explain that Sweet Simplicity contains erythritol, a low-calorie polyol (sugar alcohol), plus a small amount of fructose and other natural flavors.

“For people who think sugar substitutes stink because of their experience with the others ones out there (you can’t blame them for assuming all sugar-free sweeteners taste awful!), I cannot think of another sweetener on the market today that will convince them that there are viable and desirable replacements for sugar.”

“This product is perfect for use in virtually anything that you would put sugar in, including beverages, on fresh fruit, and even in your favorite dessert recipes. They come packaged in 30-count boxes at a suggested retail price of $9.99.”

“Just like sucralose, you do have to count Sweet Simplicity as 1g net carb per packet, but it is oh so worth it. If you are looking for something to replace the sugar you have been eating in your diet, then I cannot think of an easier or more complete way to do that than with Sweet Simplicity. This is yet another effective way to end your addiction to sugar.”

I sure hope Jimmy is right with his high praise! I can’t personally evaluate it yet, ’cause I’m out-of-town and haven’t been able to retrieve the samples that the PR folks promised to send me. As you know, I’m all about the samples. Which may sound cheesy. But I don’t care. I’ll be damned if I’m going to review a bunch of products site-unseen (spammers, take note). ‘Cause if I don’t have my integrity, I ain’t got nuthin. It’s worth it’s weight in perfect, all-natural artificial sweetener any day.

    Contrary to popular belief, sugar alcohols will raise a Type 1 diabetics BGLs. As will fructose. So, be careful about using such a sweetner. You can’t treat it as “free” like you would aspartame, acesulfame-K, or sucralose.

    I REALLY liked the Sweet Simplicity product and it is the first such consumer version of erythritol I have seen. It is VERY potent with its sweetness, so you don’t have to use very much. I hope you like it as much as I did! THANKS for the mention of my blog!

    The only thing about sugar alcohols is the number it can do tying the stomachs of some us into knots.

    If it’s like others in the class of SAs, I for one would have to tread lightly with “Sweet Simplicity”…but then at 33 cents per pack, that’s practically a foregone conclusion. :)
