Zen and the Art of Diabetes Advocacy

Meet Scott Hanselman. Then again, if you’re a devotee of techie blogs, you surely know him quite well. His smart programming blog, Computer Zen, culls 10,000 to 30,000 hits a day. He’s Chief Architect for an eBanking software company called Corillian. He’s also been an outspoken Type 1 diabetic for over 13 years now. He’s reviewed dozens of D-products and even wrote a diabetes management application for the PalmPilot, called GlucoPilot, some years back. When I first found him on the web and contacted him about 8 months ago, he wrote back to say: “diabetes doesn’t really run my life anymore.” What a great sentiment!

Frustration (+ DexCom STS to the Rescue?)

As if to underscore the point that NOBODY’s immune to the volatility of this disease, I have seen my endo today and come away incredibly frustrated! My A1c has crept up to 7.2%. Not good, in my book, especially because the only way it seems to being going lately is up. Endo thinks this may be due in part to the “rebound effect” from too much night-time Lantus (I’ve been waking up bathed in sweat). But I am NOT HAPPY, and kept badgering her about workout strategies and the pump (is it time to get serious now?!)

Mailbag Update: Stem Cell Battles, Fundraising for Faustman, and Mexican D-Camp for Kids

I am happy to report that my email inbox is so very, very full with meaningful D-news. (Thank you, people!) Yet I am so very, very behind in sharing this info. So here are a few Don’t-Miss items, from the mailbag:

Back Talk on Morrison, Yeast, PR, and Charlie Rose

Yes, I do realize that I have a tendency to dig fairly deep into a topic ONCE, and then move on. So this time I’m sharing some of the feedback and fallout from recent posts:

Anyone Catch Charlie Rose?

So I’d nearly forgotten that my uncle rang me the other day — as I was rushing out the door — to tell me that Charlie Rose was airing a Panel on Diabetes, which was starting in about 12.5 minutes! Right. We do actually have Tivo now, but I’m not THAT much of a whiz, and couldn’t stand the thought of my little ones waiting in the rain…

The Other End of PR

As many of you probably know by now, I worked in technology PR and marketing for many years. Now that I’m an independent writer, I find it strange and amusing to experience PR from the other end: I get quite a few cute “pitches” from agencies I know quite well from the old days, such as:

Morrison in the News - Anguish?

I’m not a sports fan. Not even a little. But I do have HUGE respect for anyone who can excel in athletics despite what would or could have been a debilitating disease. Think Lance Armstrong. You don’t necessarily have to like the person.

Pitching Yeast

My husband and a few buddies brew beer in our backyard as a hobby. Sometimes they ask us ladies to “pitch the yeast” (toss a vial-full of that rich-smelling substance into the tub), and we giggle hysterically. These girlfriends know all too well the constant Fracas with the Itch, and they aren’t even diabetic!

St. Patrick’s Day Specials

Happy Green Day! I couldn’t resist sharing this image of what happens when you morph a leprechaun with Michael Jackson. Keep your eyes peeled in your local Irish pub!

Anyway, a few specials of note:
