The Doctor is IN

Just a note to say that Dr. Bill Quick, a 30-year veteran endocrinologist himself, and editor of the excellent online resource DiabetesMonitor, has been diagnosed with diabetes! He came in with an A1c of 11.1 and initial BG of 293 (!)Doctorcoat_2

He’s starting insulin and “checking zillions of BGs daily,” as chronicled on his blog. He’s also planning to see a new endocrinologist of his own very soon. Now there’s a twist! Can’t wait to hear about that.

In addition, Bill’s wife Steph is a diabetes nurse educator, so she’s “having a blast second-guessing my portion sizes, insulin doses, insulin-carb ratios, etc.”

We don’t envy you, Bill! (But keep up the good work, Steph :)

Anyway, what I mean is, I’m very sorry. Welcome to the club nobody asked to join, as we say. Yes, diabetes sucks! But at least we’ve got each other…

I just discovered this blog a couple of days ago and am already getting so many sites to bookmark and other blogs to add to my Bloglines account. And just as I was thinking that all the diabetes info on the web was for type 2s. So, thanks for the link to Dr. Quick’s sites and all the others!

Every time I demonstrated BG testing to patients (up till closing my practice in 1998), I always wondered “is this the time it’ll be high?” Of course, thereafter, I didn’t have the need to demo, nor for that matter the means (as all our strips slowly outdated) so haven’t tested for a few yrs.

So, anyway, here I am, a little sweeter than I’d like to be…
