Book Review: Conquering Diabetes, at Last

I received a copy of “Conquering Diabetes by Dr. Anne Peters a few weeks ago. I must admit: I feel very guilty for letting it sit so long on my desk while others are clamoring for copies… I know they are, ’cause I asked my mom (newly identified as “pre-diabetic”) to take a look at it and tell me what she thought. They put her on a long waiting list at the library. What a popular book! And now I think I know why…

Conquerdbook_1It is clearly written and jam-packed with valuable information. It intersperses scientific fact with personal stories of people’s diagnosis experiences and struggles with diabetes. It explains, quite literally, everything you need to know about your diabetes and how to treat it: prevention, diagnosis, eating, exercise, oral drugs, insulin, women’s health issues — you name it!

Nevertheless, it’s still a pretty good read. That is quite a feat for any author, let alone one of the rare breed of “doctors who can write.”

Also, it makes a great bedside reference book because the information is broken down into nice, palatable chunks. Which is especially good because it’s mainly aimed at pre-diabetics and new Type 2′s, who may have trouble swallowing a huge amount of Diabetes Knowledge all at once. Don’t be put off by the “be the perfect diabetic” list on the back cover. All diabetes books seem to sport one.

Mom concurs, btw: “It covers everything, explains what’s happening to your body… even the charts with brand names of medicines are easy to read… it was very realistic… a medical book that actually kept my interest… I like things that are straight on!” (Ahem, looks like the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree)

Anyway, Dr. Peters ought to know her stuff. She is director of clinical diabetes programs at the University of Southern California (USC), and also treats producers, writers and stars in her own Beverly Hills clinic. Star-quality job creating a readable and REAL guidebook to diabetes.

Hudson Street Press, retails for $24.95, or currently $16.47 at Amazon.com.
