I drove over 400 miles one way to take my kids to Disneyland this week. A few Diabetic Observations on this road trip:
1) If you drive long distances regularly, you really need to be on the pump. I just couldn’t stand to stop the car just to inject myself, so got way high and all out of control the whole @%&* travel day.
2) Oooh, the layers of complexity with packing! Insulin on ice, extra needles, two sets of everything… I need to follow that last rule, by the way. My darn lancing device died the first day so I had to buy an expensive and clumsy replacement.
3) There are lots of FAT kids in America. And no wonder! I watched their overweight parents plying them with churros and ice cream and rice crispy treats — even when the kids weren’t interested. Food is not always the antidote to fussy children.
4) Vacation is HARD on your meal plan. I’m not even on a formal plan, by the way, but ended up eating things fried, breaded, buttery, and sugary out of sheer necessity. Yes, my backpack was full of healthy snacks, but the kiddies polished those off long before I actually got hungry.
Note to self: Keep road trips to a minimum. Somehow it was easier to maintain control in the plane.
